Lincoln University of Missouri, the
first 1890 Land Grant, Historically Black University in the nation, was
founded in 1866 by the enlisted men and officers of the Civil War's 62nd and
65th Colored Infantries. The university is located in Jefferson City,
Missouri, and has a diverse student population of more than 3,000. The
Lincoln University Atlanta Alumni Chapter was founded in the early 1980’s,
electing Harvey Anderson (LU 1955) as its first president. The chapter’s
first major event was its hosting of the LU National Alumni Association
Convention in Atlanta, in 1986.
In September, 1999, the chapter held several weekend events welcoming their
fellow alumni and university officials who journeyed to The ATL to
attend the LU Blue Tiger vs. Clark-Atlanta University football game. As a
result of the fundraising activities held that weekend, the Atlanta alums
were able to raise $5,000.00 to send to the Lincoln University Foundation to
establish a chapter scholarship. The Atlanta Alumni Chapter, again, hosted
the LU Alumni Association’s national convention in 2002, which resulted in
the raising of $40,000.00 for the University.
Since 1999, the Atlanta Chapter has supported the enrollment of 112 students
from Georgia, and we currently have 17 students on campus to date. Over the
past seven years the chapter has sponsored the LU Atlanta Alumni Golf
Tournament & Scholarship Fundraising Weekend, and we continued to sponsor
our annual student send-off event each August. However, without the
unwavering commitment of our local alums under the presidential leadership
of Jerold Brantley (LU 1978) from 2006 to 2016, many of our accomplishments
may not have been achieved, and we are thankful for his service.
Additionally, several Atlanta Chapter members have served our alma mater at
the national level, including Dr. James Frank (LU 1953), who was Lincoln
University President from 1973 to 1983; Hardy Dorsey (LU 1969), who was
president of the LU National Alumni Association from 2003 to 2009; and,
Lovell Lemons (LU 1976), LU National Alumni Association Vice-President from
2009 to 2013. Detral Treadwell (LU 1979), has served as a member of The
Lincoln University Foundation, and Dr. James Frank and Hardy Dorsey are
present members. Patricia Neal-Stinson (LU 1985) was the chairperson for
the 2005 LU Alumni Association National Convention held in Orlando, Florida.
There are currently more than 200 Lincoln University Alumni residing in the
state of Georgia, and we are grateful for their support.
